The Elite: Invincible

Mark Grayson, voice acted by Steven Yeun, has had a very steep hill to climb for his entire life. His father Omni-man is the world’s strongest man, and his very existence is a threat to the world. This series was created by Robert Kirkman, who loves to tap into the genre of superheroes without making us think that they are omnipotent, or all good. That’s exactly what he does to our protagonists, who are superheroes but not all good.

Mark Grayson is the son of Omni-man, a Viltrumite alien who was sent here to Earth for a very dark reason. He has been living here, among his “pets,” learning about us to better be able to fulfill his goal. But in the meantime, he married and had a son. A son who would grow among humans, as a human, and think like humans. Mark loves his powers, and he is one of the strongest, but he was taught restraint from his mother. The lesson of goodness that is supposed to be in all these superheroes, is mostly absent. So, we only see a couple, apart from Invincible who have a standard and live by morals.

The entire season is about figuring out Omni-man’s reason for what he is doing, for why he was the last alive out of all the Globe Guardians, for why he has the blood of his comrades in his hands. One would think that 20 years on Earth would change one’s view on things, but it was more than clear that he thought of us as less than him. For he spent hundreds and maybe even thousands of years in his world, in his culture, and he was not about to give that all up. So, when his son gets his powers, he believes that as his son he would join him, but Mark proves him wrong.

Mark understands that there is more to his power, more to his reason for living, of his reason for working as a hero. His desire for good, far supersedes his father’s selfish desire for world domination. The clash of philosophy and thought comes at the end of season one. Will Mark succumb to his “true destiny” or will he embrace the sanctity of humanity and its ethics? He holds the path for himself, and the world.
