I don't think I've ever been so intrigued more by a reality tv type of fiction series. I really can't say otherwise from that. This piece was directed by Jeong Jong-Yeon. An amazing masterpiece
that beautifully illustrated what creativity really can reach in a completely real environment.
Finding this cannot be described as anything less than ridiculous. I was just searching for something fun, something that could captivate me from the beginning. Looking forward to that, I stumbled upon this title in Netflix, where I saw a room that seemed a lot like an escape room; and then I learned that they were not acting. That was all happening for them as it went, and nothing was planned. It seemed cool to have something different finally pop up.
This is a show that puts people in extremely mental games, to test the human mental ability to think ahead, play together, and solve problems. These were not games of force, which most of those do bore me. These were games where people fought against each other in a pacifist but not pacifist medium, that demanded from them to learn how to lie, how to deceive, and how to play together at the same time. This was my kind of fun.
In summary, these are a bunch of Asian contestants that are famous or recognized in their fields of study. Some are top tier students from their universities, some are from Ivy League universities, some are leaders in medical and engineering fields, some are master gamers who play poker or even make games, and some are actors who have artistic abilities. Each contestant brings skill sets that they can use in the games to their favor. It’s in how they use their abilities to their favor that can get them to the top.
Every day there are challenges for the entire group where sometimes they end in eliminations or simply end in a group division that divides them into living quarters and the prison. It's in that prison where there are the death matches, in which all prisoners fight to the death for one or more eliminations.
Watching season two has been incredible. I got to see some of the contestants again and I got to see new games that were amazing. It had an even bigger yaw dropping experience than the first season.
The funny thing is that I forget this is real. I found myself thinking which one they are going to take out next, as if it's already scripted. It was sad, and kind of funny to see the artists go down first, and the "smart" guys last; but well, it's expected.
I could have never thought that I would stay late just watching a bunch of smart people play games for a prize. It was ridiculous, but I think that's why I liked it so much. For the first time, in a long time, I've laughed and had actual fun watching a show.
I suggest you watch it and have the same experience. Watch it now on Netflix and wait for its new season!!
